Soil Conditioner - designed to mix in with Perth’s sandy soil to create healthy soil and plant growth. Mushroom Compost - designed to mix in with Perth’s sandy soil to create healthy soil and plant growth. Soil Solver - is a natural clay mineral which turns sand into a fertile loam soil, full of mineral rich silts. It transforms sand into a reliable garden soil that permanently holds onto more water and nutrients, and you only need to add it once! It comes in a 22.5 kg bag. For existing beds, pour 5 kgs per sqm over the surface of the bed, water, and mix with a hand held hoe. Alternate between watering and mixing. Add another 3 to 5kgs and repeat the mixing.
Most people use Brickies Sand or Paving Sand under pavers (Brickies Sand contains clay which hardens over time and after compaction – Paving Sand has less clay content than Brickies Sand)
Special Lawn Mix is great for top dressing existing lawns. Top dress as thinly as possible about 10mm thick. You should still be able to see bits of grass after spreading. Water in well immediately afterwards and maintain regular and heavy watering for 10 days after top dressing.
DON’T SKIMP. Too little is as good as none at all. It is recommended to apply a layer between 75mm to 100mm. Avoid mulching up to the stem of plants and avoid compacting mulch once laid.
The advantages of mulching your garden beds, is for water conservation. Mulch stops the top of the soil drying out, keeps the soil moist, and can reduce watering by about 60 per cent. Mulching also prevents weeds and weed seed germination, which compete with plants for moisture and nutrients. Mulching also keeps the soil temperature constant. It is good idea to rake mulch every couple of months to allow aeration to the plants roots. Mulch breaks down into valuable nutrients and provides an attractive ground cover. The end of Winter & early Spring is the best time to mulch your garden. Ideally, the soil will be moist from winter rains, and you want to help keep that moisture bank in the soil and protect it & before warmer temperatures cause the topsoil to dry out.
